Can you tell me more about this?

Staff are doing everything they can to keep trains moving, but need to advise you that your journey could be affected. If there are any further details, updates will be posted on this page.

You can also see advice from the Met Office here.

Heavy rain can cause a number of problems for railway infrastructure. If floods occur and the water is fast-moving, it can dislodge the ballast which supports the track. Ballast is the term we use for the small granite stones which you see under the rails. As ballast is used to ensure the railway track has a stable base, it's important that it's in a safe condition.

There are also potential issues for the electric third rail which powers many trains, as well as the signalling system.

To help reduce disruption caused by flooding, Network Rail work to ensure pumps and flood barriers are in place, and also jointly plan for the impact of severe weather. Control room staff monitor reports of excess water and ensure staff are sent to deal with this is as quickly as possible.

Strong winds cause a number of issues for the railway. Some routes are lined by huge numbers of trees, and although these are regularly assessed, even one tree can cause significant disruption when it falls onto the track. Specialist teams will need to attend and make sure it is removed, and that any other nearby trees have not been affected.

Debris can also be blown onto the line, often from surrounding properties. Neighbours are encouraged to make sure their property is safe and secure, so that it doesn't end up on the track, where it's likely to be damaged. Again, in these cases, staff will attend and make sure the railway is clear.

Speed restrictions may be put in place to allow drivers to stop in time, should there be obstructions on the railway. On routes with overhead wires, these may also be affected by high wind speeds. Your journey may be delayed, as this means the network has lower capacity, because trains take longer to travel along each section of track.

Compensation:

You may be entitled to compensation if you experience a delay in completing your journey today. Please keep your train ticket and make a note of your journey, as both will be required to support any claim.
