70min Flex (Semi-Flexible) Tickets

A new ticket type that makes travelling by train a little more flexible.

As part of a Simpler Fares pilot, we've introduced a new Semi-Flexible ticket, a 70min Flex ticket. This new ticket type lets you travel on any LNER train up to 70 minutes before or after your originally booked journey.

The new 70min Flex ticket is only available on limited routes as part of the trial. These are:

  • Between London and Newcastle
  • Between London and Berwick
  • Between London and Edinburgh

On these routes, Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak tickets will no longer be available, but you'll still be able to access cheap tickets with Advance tickets and add flexibility with 70min Flex tickets.

Like Fixed Advance tickets, you also get a guaranteed seat on your booked train. If your plans change, it’s easy to swap your ticket on ‘My Account’ on the LNER website or the LNER App. You’ll be shown all other valid trains and can swap at the click of a button. If you’re not online, board any valid train and find an available seat.

What are the advantages?

  • If you think your meeting might over run or if you're wanting to get home a little earlier for dinner, you can flex your ticket
  • Cheaper than an Anytime (Fully Flexible) ticket

FAQs

Are 70min Flex tickets refundable?

70min Flex tickets are not refundable. However, you can change your journey to another train 70 minutes before or after your originally booked journey.

A £10 admin fee will apply.

Please check our Refunds page to see more information about our refund policy.

Can I change my 70min Flex ticket?

70min Flex tickets offer more flexibility than an Advance ticket. You can use them to travel on your booked train or any LNER train for the same journey 70 minutes before or after your original train.

You can change your seat reservations in My account on the LNER app so you can enjoy your journey in comfort. If you're not able to get on the app, you can sign into your account on the LNER website and go to 'My account' to edit your seat reservation.

If you want to change it outside of your 70 minute flex window, they can be changed to another train or date, but this includes a £10 admin fee plus any extra if your new ticket costs more.

If you think you need more flexibility, take a look at our Anytime tickets.

When can I buy a 70min Flex ticket?

70min Flex tickets can usually be bought 12 weeks before your date of travel. Sometimes we'll release tickets further in advance and other times certain dates may be available to purchase later due to engineering. Check if your planned date is available and create a ticket alert.

You can also buy a Fixed ticket up to 5 minutes before a train's scheduled departure depending on availability.

Can I get a Railcard discount on 70min Flex tickets?

Yes, you can get a Railcard discount when booking a 70min Flex ticket. Just add your Railcard during your booking.

What if I have Passenger Assistance and I decide to flex with the 70min Flex?

If you use your 70min Flex on a different train from your LNER account, your original Passenger Assist booking will be pre-populated for you to amend to the new train.

If you use your 70min Flex within the 2-hours of travelling, we recommend arriving at the station a little earlier to ensure our colleagues can help you.

How does 70min Flex work if there's disruption?

Your 70min Flex ticket will work the same as usual in disruption. Your 70min Flex applies to the planned departure date, so even if your intended train is outside of the 70min Flex window, you can still board as normal.

If there is major disruption and there are no trains running within your 70min Flex window, you will likely be told to board the next available train.
