Travelling with an e-scooter

Due to safety concerns petrol and electric-powered scooters (e-scooters), as well as other recreational mobility devices powered by lithium-ion batteries, are not permitted on our trains.

LNER is committed to supporting those who do not wish to drive at the start or end of their long-distance journey, but the safety of our customers and staff must come first.

The ban of e-scooters across most train operators is in response to concerns regarding the current increased fire risk of such devices and will be reviewed by the industry in due course following improvements in regulation of their use and manufacture.

What scooters are allowed onboard?

  • Non-electric scooters
  • Mobility aids - These must comply with our maximum size requirements found on our accessibility page
  • Electric bikes are allowed onboard, but must not be charged onboard

Please note that petrol scooters and mopeds are NOT permitted onboard. This is due to health and safety around carrying petrol onboard trains.

FAQs

Why have you banned e-scooters on your trains?

This is due to recent incidents and the risks associated with them using faulty lithium batteries and catching fire. The result of such onboard a train could cause serious harm to passengers and staff.

What if I turn up at the station with my e-scooter?

There are not currently any e-scooter storage spaces along our route. As such, we would recommend travelling to and from the station using another mode of transport.

Can I bring my non electric scooter onboard with me?

Non-electric scooters are acceptable to bring onboard, as long as they do not have any fixed or removable battery power source.

Please note petrol powered scooters and mopeds are NOT permitted due to health and safety around petrol onboard trains.

Why haven’t you banned E-bikes?

There are a greater number of regulations around e-bikes, as such these are deemed as safer and a lower risk.

Does this apply to other forms of micro-mobility e.g., hoverboards?

Yes. Only e-bikes and electric mobility aids are allowed onboard.

Does this apply to mobility scooters?

No. Electric mobility aids are welcome onboard our trains. Please check that your mobility aid does not exceed our maximum size.

How long will e-scooters be banned for?

Until greater regulation and testing can be brought in to ensure the safety of those travelling on trains, e-scooters and other electric modes of transport will be banned.

Can I leave my e-scooter at your station?

There are not currently any e-scooter storage spaces along our route. As such, we would recommend travelling to and from the station using another mode of transport. Bikes are available to hire at some of our stations should you wish to cycle to your final destination.

Can you stop me travelling if I insist on carrying my e-scooter onboard?

Whilst an e-scooter isn’t allowed onboard our services or in our stations, if you arrive at a station with one and still need to travel we will encourage you to return without your e-scooter and we will endeavour to get you on an alternative service.
