Disruption between Brighton and Haywards Heath expected until the end of the day

A fault with the signalling system between Brighton and Haywards Heath means that trains have to run at a reduced speed on the line towards Haywards Heath.

As a result, trains running between these stations may be cancelled or delayed by up to 25 minutes.

Disruption is expected until the end of the day.

Customer advice:

Southern, Thameslink and Gatwick Express services may be delayed by between 15-25 minutes between Brighton and Hassocks. This is affecting services in both directions to and from London.

Services will be impacted with the following changes:

  • Southern services between Littlehampton and London Victoria in both directions will still run with some being diverted via the Arun Valley. These will be amended prior to starting their journey, so please check journey planners for the latest information regarding your train.
  • Thameslink services may be terminated early and started from a later station on their booked route. This is due to congestion in the area.
  • Gatwick Express services will run between Gatwick Airport and London Victoria only.

You can still use your normal route, but please leave extra time. It is recommended that you take the first available train towards your destination, and change where necessary. Your journey will be delayed by between 15-25 minutes.

You can use your ticket at no extra cost on the following:

  • Metrobus services:- 3 for Crawley, Three Bridges, Gatwick Airport- 20 for Three Bridges, Gatwick Airport, Horley- 271 for Brighton, Preston Park, Hassocks, Burgess Hill, Wivelsfield, Haywards Heath, Crawley- 272 for Brighton, Preston Park, Hassocks, Burgess Hill, Wivelsfield, Haywards Heath, Crawley, Three Bridges- 273 for Brighton and Preston Park, Hassocks, Crawley
  • Alternative Southern / Thameslink services via any reasonable route
  • London Underground between London terminals

Late-running trains may be revised. This means they may not stop at all of the usual stations, or they may terminate part of the way along their usual routes. As a result, you may need to change trains to get to your destination. This may mean your journey takes longer, however, it does allow trains and crews to get back to the right places for the rest of the day's timetable.Departure boards and station announcements will be kept up to date, so please keep an eye on the latest information when you're travelling.

Planning your journey:

You can see a live map of the network here. This will now show where your journey is likely to be delayed. The live departure boards can be found here. You can also see an alternative route guide here.If you're travelling in the London area, you can plan journeys on alternative routes by using the TfL Journey Planner here.

Can you tell me more about the incident?

A track circuit failure will disrupt your journey in the Hassocks area. Network Rail engineers will be unable to assess the track circuit failure until later on this evening. In the meantime,, services will be amended to ease congestion in the affected area. This part of the network uses track circuits to detect the position of trains. These are electrical systems which monitor whether a train is on a section of track. They operate as part of the signalling system, which is designed to be "fail safe".When a track circuit fails, the signalling system will interpret this as a train remaining in place, even though there may not be a train present at all, or the previous service may have long since left the area.As a result, further trains cannot be automatically allowed onto the relevant section of track. Train drivers will be stopped by red signals on approach. They will then get verbal permission from the signaller so that they can proceed, and will run at a heavily-reduced speed as far as the next signal. This is so that the drivers will stop safely if they see anything ahead of them.In some areas, the sections between signals can be several miles long, so this can result in delays building up. Even with shorter sections of track affected, there would still be a delay of at least a few minutes to each journey.Track circuit faults can be caused by a number of different issues, including electronic faults or obstructions on the track. Network Rail manage the signalling system, including track circuits, and their staff will be investigating as quickly as possible.
