Travelling to London

London Underground Ticket Information

When travelling to London, your final destination may not be the National Rail station you arrive at (London King's Cross for East Coast journeys). To make it easy for you to get into and around London when you arrive, for single and return journeys you can buy a through train and Tube ticket from the National Rail station where you start your journey, at the same time as booking your train tickets online.

Please check that the station you require is in the underground zone you select – there is a useful map on the Transport for London website.

Once you have decided which type of ticket you need for your journey, train and Tube inclusive tickets can be booked whilst booking your train tickets as follows:

  • In the “Buy Rail Tickets" panel on the left hand side of this page, type in “Zone” and a drop down list will appear for you to select the option which covers the zones you need
  • Select an option with a U before the zone you require . For example "Zone U1* Londn" is a single/return through train and Tube ticket to zones 1 and 2 and "Zone U1256 Londn" is a single/return through train and Tube ticket to zones 1-6
  • Such tickets must be booked 7 days in advance to allow for postal delivery

Alternatively, if purchasing an Anytime or Off Peak train ticket, it may be cheaper to buy a Peak or Off-Peak Day through Travelcard (which includes travel on the Tube, DLR and London Overground).  You can do this as follows:

  • In the "Buy Rail Tickets" panel on the left hand side of this page, type in "London zones" and a drop down list will appear for you to select the option which meets your needs
  • For all East Coast services, you must select "London zones 1-6" as our services pass through all zones
  • These Travelcards are not available as through tickets from all National Rail stations - for example they are not available from East Coast stations north of Newark North Gate
  • Such tickets must be booked 7 days in advance to allow for postal delivery

There is a handy fare checker on the Transport for London website (for fares entirely within the Tube/Travelcard area) to help you work out the right option for you.

Regular travellers to London may find an “Oyster card” is a better value option. The Oyster card is a smart card pre-loaded with credit to use as soon as you arrive in London. More information on Oyster cards is can be found on the Transport for London website.
