Our simplified tickets

We've streamlined ticket options to offer more cost-effective fares for your journey, ensuring that a return trip never exceeds the cost of two single fares.

Single tickets help reduce overcrowding on our trains, thereby increasing the availability of seat reservations for passengers.

Please note that return tickets for journeys both within and beyond the LNER network are still available to purchase.

We're also running a new Simpler Fares pilot with a new 70min Flex ticket. Find out more here.

We're making tickets even easier for you by pioneering a Simpler Fares pilot along selected journeys on the east coast route. Find out more about our pilot below.

Our Simpler Fares pilot aims to make buying tickets even easier and give customers a better experience with just three ticket types. The existing Advance (Fixed) ticket and Anytime (Fully Flexible) and the new 70min Flex (Semi-Flexible) ticket.

These ticket types will be available to book from Tuesday 16 January 2024 for travel from Monday 5 February. 70min Flex (Semi-Flexible) will only be available between London King's Cross and Newcastle, London King's Cross and Berwick and London King's Cross and Edinburgh.

Advance Single

For travel on a specific train at a specific time. This will be the most cost-effective option for those who know when they wish to travel.

Off-Peak/Super Off-Peak

For travel on any train outside of peak travel times (typically Monday to Friday), or on any train at weekends or on public holidays. In Standard Class, there may be Off-Peak or Super Off-Peak Single tickets available depending on your journey, and in First Class, Off-Peak Single tickets may be available. These fares offer the best value flexibility for customers who aren't sure exactly when they will travel.

70min Flex (Semi-Flexible) - Pilot

This new ticket type offers you a chance to change your ticket to a train 70 minutes before or after your booked train. It is only available as part of a pilot on selected routes.

Anytime Single

Our most flexible ticket, for travel on any train at any time on your chosen route on the day(s) for which it is valid. It's a bit more expensive, but you'll have the most choice of when to travel.

FAQs

What is happening to make tickets simpler?

We understand that rail travel can sometimes be confusing which is why we are committed to making tickets as simple as possible. Following customer feedback to our initial pilot, we are simplifying tickets across our route.

Since 11 June, we have removed most return tickets as an option to buy for LNER managed journeys. You will be able to mix and match rail tickets to get the best value and flexibility for your journey.

Please note, you can still see and be able to purchase return tickets available for other train operators, as well as a small number of LNER journeys.

What are you doing to ensure passengers continue to get a good deal on their travel?

Most of our passengers choose to buy fixed tickets because they offer excellent value, and this is the case in our simpler fares pilot, too.

Additionally, we have committed to the following assurances to provide a large range of good value fares within the simpler fares pilot.

  1. There is a maximum price: the “Fully Flexible” (Anytime) ticket.
  2. A large selection of cheap seats: at least 2/3 of all “Fixed” (Advance) tickets sold will be priced at 50% or less than the price of the Fully Flexible (Anytime) ticket.
  3. A maximum of 10% of all “Fixed” (Advance) tickets will be sold at 80% or more of the Fully Flexible (Anytime) price
What are the changes to ticket types?

When buying LNER tickets, you will no longer be able to purhase Return tickets for the majority of LNER journeys. Instead you can choose from the following single tickets in both Standard and First Class.

Fixed (Advance Single)
For travel on a specific train at a specific time

Off-Peak/Super Off-Peak Single
For travel on any less busy train outside of peak travel times (in First Class it is called an Off-Peak Single)

Fully Flexible (Anytime)
For travel on any train at any time

Please note, you will still see and be able to purchase Return tickets available for other train operators, as well as a small number of LNER journeys.

Why are the return tickets changing?

We know from your feedback that choosing rail tickets can be confusing. So for us at LNER, it is important to make choosing rail tickets simpler for everyone.

With most return tickets on LNER journeys being removed, you need one single ticket for each leg of your journey. This means you can enjoy excellent value tickets in advance, and flexible travel options for last-minute journeys.

Will I need to make a separate seat reservation?

Single tickets usually come with an automatic seat reservation but we advise to check in advance of travel. Flexible single tickets (Off-Peak and Anytime) can be changed for free up to five minutes before your scheduled departure from each station via our reservation tool online or by using the LNER App, if purchased online.
