Cathedral city
Some of history’s major bad guys feature in the story of Peterborough Cathedral - Henry VIII, Oliver Cromwell and the rampaging Vikings. Cromwell and his army gave the cathedral a hard time in the Civil War. Smashing stained glass was a favoured technique.
It still looks magnificent though – no wonder they say it’s one of the ‘finest Norman cathedrals in England’.
Station to station
From super-modern trains to Peterborough to something completely different. Climb aboard a steam train on the Nene Valley Railway for a proper blast from the past. Steam trains are just so… romantic. Just don’t ask for the Wi-Fi password…
Hidden Peterborough
Fascinating wall paintings are the order of the day at Longthorpe Tower. Kings jostle with musicians, saints with monsters, on the walls of this medieval tower. Astonishingly they were rediscovered by the Home Guard who were stationed there during WWII. Sounds like an episode of Dad’s Army.
