When could be a better time to visit Paris than in springtime? The weather is fresh and sunny and the gardens, particularly in the famous Jardin du Luxembourg, are starting to bloom. Until 6 March you can skate on the ice-rink in front of the Hôtel de Ville; the 10th Traversee de Paris sees a procession of around 450 classic cars through the city, and the exuberant Carnaval de Paris takes place on 14 February.
In Lille, events of note include the European Film Festival of short films (26 Feb-5 Mar) at UGC Cinema and the Animation Festival (19-21 Mar), while youngsters can have a whale of a time at Happy Day at the Opera House (27 Mar), when the building is transformed into a wonderland of play and discovery, with interactive installations, treasure hunts and shows on every level of the building.
Now is the perfect time to stroll around Brussels and, with the opening of the Musée Magritte last year, a walking tour of the city’s “surreal” spots, taking in the artist’s favourite haunts as well as those of his followers, is ideal. Find a range of themed tours at
